Lay On MacAwesome

Stupid Shakespeare winning me over with his words.

I used to have a pretty lukewarm relationship with the bard, due at least partially to all the Shakespeare nuts running around drooling in iambic pentameter and giggling every time someone said coxcomb. (Get it? Penis joke.) Sure, he was good, but I was so over him.

But after glutting myself on the history plays during Henry V, I’ve developed a taste for his darker stuff. And reading the dread Scottish Play, a line in the second scene hit me square in the gut.

“For brave Macbeth--well he deserves that name--
Disdaining fortune, with his brandish'd steel,
Which smoked with bloody execution,
Like valour's minion carved out his passage
Till he faced the slave;
Which ne'er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him,
Till he unseam'd him from the nave to the chaps,
And fix'd his head upon our battlements.”

Let’s read that again shall we:

“Till he UNSEAM’D HIM from the nave to the chaps
And fix’d his head upon our battlements.”

Ew.

Awesome.

EW!!

AWESOME!!!

That really paints a picture, you know. A disturbing, disturbing picture.

Just wanted to share that little tidbit from my day. Hooray for reading!

PS: Isn’t that text portrait awesome? This guy has lots of other neat drawings on his photostream. Hooray for flickr creative common searches! Hooray for the internets!
